Korean doe/mal measures vs. US and UK gallons — why they differ
Doe and mal are traditional Korean volume units used since the Joseon era for trading grain and liquids. Today's measurement law defines 1 doe as about 1.8039L, though everyday use often rounds it to 1.8L for convenience (rice shops' "doet-bak" scoop is a classic example). Ten doe make up 1 mal (about 18.039L, rounded to 18L in practice), while dividing 1 doe into ten parts gives 1 hop (about 180.4mL).
