What is volume unit conversion?

Volume conversion translates a value between the metric system (mL, L, m³), cooking measures (teaspoon, tablespoon, cup), the US gallon, and Korean traditional units (doe, mal). This tool converts every unit through a common liter (L) base so any pair can be computed instantly.

How to use it

Enter a value, choose the from and to units, and the result updates automatically. Use Swap units to flip the two selections.

Result = value × (from-unit liters) ÷ (to-unit liters)

Unit reference & notes

Common conversions: 1 doe ≈ 1.8L, 1 Korean measuring cup = 200mL, 1 mal = 18.039L, 1 US gallon ≈ 3.785L.

For reference only: conversion factors follow SI standards plus the Korean 200mL measuring cup and traditional doe/mal values; rounding may cause tiny differences from exact values.
Korean doe/mal measures vs. US and UK gallons — why they differ

Doe and mal are traditional Korean volume units used since the Joseon era for trading grain and liquids. Today's measurement law defines 1 doe as about 1.8039L, though everyday use often rounds it to 1.8L for convenience (rice shops' "doet-bak" scoop is a classic example). Ten doe make up 1 mal (about 18.039L, rounded to 18L in practice), while dividing 1 doe into ten parts gives 1 hop (about 180.4mL). The 1.8L "doetbyeong" bottle used for makgeolli gets its size directly from this traditional unit.

The gallon is a classic example of a Western unit that varies by country. The US gallon is defined as 231 cubic inches, exactly 3.785411784L, while the UK (Imperial) gallon is defined as 4.54609L. The ratio between them is about 1.201, meaning a UK gallon holds roughly 20% more than a US gallon despite sharing the name "gallon." Fuel economy is reported as MPG (miles per US gallon) in the US and MPG (miles per UK gallon) in the UK, so the same "30 MPG" figure represents different actual efficiency depending on the country. This calculator uses the more internationally common US gallon as its reference.

How many liters is 1 doe?
The Korean traditional volume unit doe is about 1.8L (1.8039L), customarily used for rice and grain trade; 10 doe equal 1 mal (~18L).
How many mL is a Korean measuring cup?
A Korean cooking measuring cup is usually 200mL, different from the US cup (~240mL) — check your recipe's origin.
How many liters is 1 gallon?
The US gallon is about 3.78541L, different from the imperial gallon (~4.546L); this calculator uses the US gallon.
How many mL is 1 hop?
1 hop is 1/10 of a doe, about 180.4mL — a unit derived from the traditional Korean "hop-doe" measuring scoop.
How much do US and UK gallons differ?
A US gallon is 3.785412L and a UK (Imperial) gallon is 4.54609L — the UK gallon holds about 1.201× (roughly 20%) more. Even though both are called "1 gallon," the actual volume differs by country.
Why is a makgeolli "doetbyeong" bottle exactly 1.8L?
Because it was sized to hold exactly 1 doe (about 1.8L), the traditional Korean volume unit. The name "doetbyeong" literally means "a bottle the size of one doe."
