What is this converter?

The Korean-to-kana name converter transliterates Korean names and words into pronunciation-approximate Japanese katakana and hiragana. Foreign names are conventionally written in katakana, so this is handy as a reference. Everything runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to a server.

How it works

Each Korean syllable is split into initial, medial and final jamo, then joined using a pronunciation-approximate kana mapping table.

syllable = initial + medial + final

e.g. 김치 → キムチ, 사랑 → サラン, 도쿄 → トキョ (approximate). Hiragana is derived from katakana via a Unicode offset shift. Non-Korean characters (letters, digits, spaces, punctuation) pass through unchanged.

Final consonant (batchim) handling
  • ㄴ → ン, ㅁ → ム, ㄹ → ル
  • ㄱ/ㅋ → ク, ㅂ/ㅍ → プ, ㅅ/ㅈ → ス
  • ㅇ → ン (approximate, final nasalization)
Is this identical to official Japanese transliteration?
No. This tool splits each Korean syllable into initial, medial and final jamo and maps it to a similarly-pronounced kana. It may differ from official loanword transliteration rules or personally registered spellings.
Should I use katakana or hiragana?
Foreign names and proper nouns are conventionally written in katakana; hiragana is provided as an additional reference. Choose whichever fits your purpose.
How are final consonants (batchim) handled?
Final consonants are approximated to a similarly-pronounced kana — e.g. ㄴ becomes ン, ㅁ becomes ム, ㄹ becomes ル, ㅂ/ㅍ become プ — and may not exactly match real Japanese pronunciation rules.
Are letters, digits and symbols converted?
Non-Korean characters (letters, digits, spaces, punctuation) are passed through unchanged.
