Pyeong and square meters
Pyeong is a traditional Korean/Japanese area unit; 1 pyeong equals 3.305785 m², and 1 m² equals about 0.3025 pyeong. This tool also supports km², hectares (ha), ares (a), square feet (ft²), square yards (yd²), and jeongbo.
How to use it
Enter a value, choose the from and to units, and the result updates automatically. Use Swap units to flip the two selections.
Result = value × (from-unit m²) ÷ (to-unit m²)
Common conversions: 1 pyeong = 3.306 m², 84 m² ≈ 25.4 pyeong, 1 ha = 10,000 m².
Notes
Why 3.305785 m²? — Origins in the old East Asian unit system
Pyeong's oddly precise factor of 400/121 m² (≈3.305785 m²) traces back to the traditional East Asian cheok-gwan unit system. One pyeong was defined as the area of a square with sides of 6 cheok, and in Korea/Japan, 1 cheok equals 10/33 m (about 30.303 cm). Six cheok is therefore 20/11 m, and squaring that gives exactly 400/121 m² — matching this calculator's factor precisely.
In everyday use, people often approximate with ×3.3 instead of the exact 400/121. Checking the error: for 10 pyeong, the exact value is 33.0579 m² versus 33.0000 m² approximated, a difference of about 0.175% — the same ratio holds at any scale, so ×3.3 is a fine mental shortcut, but exact contracts or registrations should use the precise factor.
Since 2007, Korea's official legal unit of area has been the square meter, and pyeong is technically not allowed on property registries or contracts. Even so, pyeong remains widely used in everyday real-estate conversation — a common case of a legal unit and a customary unit coexisting.
