What is weight unit conversion?

Weight conversion translates a value between the metric system (mg, g, kg, t), the imperial/US system (ounce, pound), and Korean traditional units (geun, gwan). This tool converts every unit through a common kilogram (kg) base so any pair can be computed instantly.

How to use it

Enter a value, choose the from and to units, and the result updates automatically. Use Swap units to flip the two selections.

Result = value × (from-unit kg) ÷ (to-unit kg)

Unit reference & notes

Common conversions: 1 geun (meat) = 600g, 1 pound ≈ 453.6g, 1 gwan = 3.75kg, 1 ounce ≈ 28.35g.

For reference only: conversion factors follow SI/international standards plus the customary butcher's geun (600g); rounding may cause tiny differences from exact values.
Why is one "don" exactly 3.75g? Geun and don in Korea's precious-metal trade

When trading gold or silver, Korean markets still use don instead of grams. One don is defined as exactly 3.75g, a value carried over from "jeon (錢)," a Joseon-era currency and scale unit. As the phrase "how much for one don of pure gold" suggests, jewelry and bullion prices are still customarily quoted per don (3.75g) today. Converted to grams, 10 don is 37.5g and 100 don is 375g.

Meanwhile, the butcher's geun and the produce market's geun are a classic case of the same name meaning different weights by convention. At butcher shops, 1 geun of meat is commonly treated as 600g, while traditional markets selling vegetables and fruit often treat 1 geun as about 375g. The exact origin varies by item-trading custom and can differ by region or store, so it's safest to confirm the actual weight when buying.

How are gwan and don related?
1 gwan (3.75kg) is exactly 1,000 times 1 don (3.75g). Both units were used together in the Joseon-era measurement system — gwan for larger weights like rice and grain, don for smaller weights like precious metals.
