What is the Korean Word Quiz?

The Korean Word Quiz is a vocabulary game built on everyday Korean nouns, in four formats: guess from the initial consonants and a clue, guess from a clue and the number of syllables, pick from four choices after reading a clue, and a crossword where you fill a grid from across and down clues. Every quiz clue is a short sentence written for this site, and it never contains a syllable of the answer. Quiz content stays in Korean, so it doubles as vocabulary practice.

Rules by mode

The initials quiz shows the initial consonants and a clue from the start; a hint reveals the first syllable. Clue + length gives a clue and one blank per syllable, and a hint reveals the first syllable. Multiple choice offers four words drawn from the same topic. In all three, a correct answer without a hint earns 2 points and with a hint 1 point.

In the crossword you pick a 5×5, 7×7 or 9×9 grid and fill it using the across and down clues. Each cell holds one syllable, and words start at the numbered cells. Type a whole word and fill it in at once, use Check to see which cells are wrong, and use Reveal letter or Reveal word when you are stuck. When every cell is right, your time and hint count are recorded.

Keyboard shortcuts

In multiple choice, press 1-4 to pick a choice, then Space or Enter for the next question once the answer is shown. In the initials quiz and clue + length, type your answer and press Enter to submit (Space is part of the input while typing). In the crossword, press Enter in the input box to fill in the word, and Tab or Shift+Tab to move to the next or previous clue.

What ways can I play?
There are four: an initials quiz (see the initials and a clue, then type the word), clue + length (read a clue and type a word that fits the blanks), multiple choice (pick one of four words), and a crossword (fill a grid from across and down clues). Choose a card on the first screen.
How do I choose a topic and the number of questions?
After you pick a mode, a setup screen opens. For the three quizzes, choose a topic (food, animals and plants, daily life, nature and weather, places and transport, body and health, people and jobs, culture and school) or all topics, set 10 or 20 questions, and press Start. For the crossword, choose a small 5×5, medium 7×7 or large 9×9 grid.
How is the score calculated?
In the initials quiz and clue + length, a correct answer without a hint is worth 2 points, with a hint (first syllable revealed) 1 point, and a wrong answer or I don’t know is 0. In multiple choice a correct answer is 2 points. Your streak of correct answers is shown, and the best score is saved for each mode, topic and question count. The crossword records your solving time and hints used instead of a score.
How does the crossword work?
Tap a cell in the grid or a clue in the list to select a word, type that word in Hangul in the input box and press Fill in. Tapping a crossing cell again switches between across and down, and Check briefly turns wrong cells red. If you are stuck, Reveal letter or Reveal word gives a hint. When every cell is right, the result screen shows your time.
Can I play with the keyboard?
Yes. In multiple choice press 1 to 4 to pick a choice, and after the answer is revealed press Space or Enter for the next question. While typing text, Space is part of the input and Enter submits. In the crossword, press Enter in the input box to fill in the word, and Tab or Shift+Tab to move to the next or previous clue.
Where are my records stored?
