What is the Flag & Capital Quiz?

A geography quiz with two modes: name the country from its flag, or name the capital from the country. Each round has 10 or 20 questions with 4 choices each. Wrong choices are drawn from the same continent first, so knowing the continent alone will not solve it. Look-alike flags such as Indonesia and Monaco never appear together in one question.

Difficulty and question pool

All countries draws from about 200 countries: UN members plus the Vatican, Palestine, Kosovo and Taiwan. Well-known uses only 60 major countries for both questions and choices. The capital mode leaves out countries whose capital is disputed or split, such as Israel, Bolivia, South Africa, Sri Lanka and Tanzania, and city-states whose name is the capital.

Privacy

Your best score per mode and difficulty is stored only in this browser (localStorage) and never sent to a server. Flag images are files hosted on this site, so no external server is called. The flag artwork comes from the open-source flag-icons project (MIT license).

Frequently asked questions

How many questions are there and how does a round work?
A round has 10 or 20 questions with 4 choices each. Tapping a choice immediately shows whether it was right, and the Next button moves on. After the last question you see your score and a review list of the ones you missed.
What does the Well-known difficulty do?
It builds questions and choices from 60 major countries only, which makes it the easier setting. All countries draws from about 200, including small island nations and flags that look alike.
What about countries with a disputed capital?
Countries such as Israel, Bolivia, South Africa, Sri Lanka and Tanzania, whose capital is split or internationally disputed, are left out of the capital mode. They still appear in the flag mode.
Where is my best score stored?
The best score for each mode and difficulty is kept only in this browser's localStorage and is never sent to a server. It is not shared with other devices or browsers.
