Webcam Test

Check that your camera works and see its resolution and picture.

Turn on your camera to see if the picture is fine and what resolution and frame rate it runs at.

Video is never sent to or stored on a server; it is handled only in this browser.
What is the webcam test?

A tool that checks in your browser whether a laptop, PC or phone camera turns on, whether the picture looks right, and what its real resolution and frame rate are. Handy before video calls or online classes.

How to use it

Press Start webcam test and allow camera access. You get a preview with the actual resolution and frame rate, and with several cameras you can choose one under Camera. After Take snapshot, press Save as PNG to download the picture. Press Stop to turn the camera off when done.

Note: Resolution and frame rate are what the browser actually receives from the camera, so they can differ from the product specification.
Real-world uses

Check picture quality and brightness before a video meeting, test that an external webcam is connected, or compare built-in and external cameras.

The camera will not turn on.
Check in the lock icon in the address bar that this site's camera permission is Allow. If another program such as a video-call app is using the camera it may not start, so close it and retry. Some laptops also have a camera privacy switch, or camera access blocked in the operating system's privacy settings.
The resolution shown differs from my camera's specification.
The browser picks the resolution the camera actually sends based on bandwidth and device settings, so it can be lower than the product specification (for example 1080p). This tool shows the real size delivered (videoWidth × videoHeight). Dim lighting can also lower the frame rate.
Is the video sent to a server or stored?
No. The camera picture appears only in this browser and is not sent to a server. A snapshot is downloaded to your device only when you press Save as PNG, and the camera switches off as soon as you press Stop or leave the page.
What does mirroring change?
The webcam preview is flipped like a mirror by default because that feels natural. In a video call the other person usually sees the unflipped original. Turn mirroring off to see text on an object as it really reads; a snapshot is saved exactly as currently shown.
How do I choose between several cameras?
Once the camera is on, connected cameras appear in the Camera list at the top. You can switch between a laptop's built-in camera, an external webcam, or a phone's front and rear cameras. Names appear only after camera permission is granted.
