    What is this?

Snake is a classic arcade game — steer a snake around a grid to eat food and grow longer. Survive as long as possible without hitting a wall or your own body to rack up a high score.

    How to play

Use arrow keys or swipe to change the snake's direction. The snake keeps moving automatically and cannot reverse directly into itself. Eating food grows the snake by one segment and adds to your score. The game ends when you hit a wall or your own body. Choose Slow, Normal, or Fast speed before you start.

Snake's origin — from arcades to the Nokia 3210

Games where a snake grows by eating and ends on hitting a wall or its own body trace back to the 1976 arcade game "Blockade." Many computer and console variants followed, but it was Nokia's decision to preload it on the Nokia 3210 in 1998 that turned it into a game played by hundreds of millions worldwide. Its simple, few-button rules are why it's still reproduced online today with the same arrow-key or swipe controls.

The theoretical maximum score on this board

This board is 20×20 = 400 cells, and the snake starts at 3 segments long. Score rises by 1 per food eaten, and each food also grows the snake by one segment — so filling the entire board requires eating 400 − 3 = 397 more food items. That makes the theoretical maximum score on this board 397; beyond that, there's no empty cell left to place new food, and the game ends in an automatic win.

    How do I play Snake?
Press an arrow key or swipe the screen to change the snake's direction. The snake moves automatically; eating food grows it by one segment and adds to your score.
    What ends the game?

    Can I change the speed?
Yes — choose Slow, Normal, or Fast at any time before starting the game.
Where is my best score stored?
Your best score is stored only in your browser's local storage — never sent to a server or shared across devices.
