Child Height Predictor

Predict a child's adult height range from the parents' heights.

Formula-
Parents' average height0 cm
Range low (−8.5 cm)0 cm
Range high (+8.5 cm)0 cm

This is only a statistical estimate of genetic target height and varies with nutrition, sleep and growth pace. For growth concerns see a pediatrician; for height versus peers use the KDCA (Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency) growth charts.

What is mid-parental height?

Mid-parental height is the most widely used way to gauge the adult height a child may reach genetically from the parents' heights. It adjusts for the average height gap between men and women (about 13 cm), so sons and daughters use different formulas. The result is not a guess at one child's height but the statistical centre for children of the same parents.

How to use

Choose the child's sex and enter the father's and mother's heights (cm); the predicted adult height and range update instantly. Use measured heights rather than remembered ones for a better result.

To see where your child stands among peers now, use the KDCA growth charts; this calculator contains no growth-chart data. For body size see the BMI calculator, and for daily energy needs the BMR calculator.

Formulas and sources

This is the mid-parental height method set out by Tanner et al. (Arch Dis Child, 1970). All heights are in cm.

Mid-parental height formulas
ChildPredicted adult height
Son(father + mother + 13) ÷ 2
Daughter(father + mother − 13) ÷ 2

The prediction range is ±8.5 cm around the estimate, a width commonly cited as roughly a 95% range. For example, with a 175 cm father and 162 cm mother, a son is (175 + 162 + 13) ÷ 2 = 175.0 cm (166.5–183.5 cm) and a daughter is (175 + 162 − 13) ÷ 2 = 162.0 cm (153.5–170.5 cm).

Limits: actual height varies with nutrition, sleep, timing of puberty, growth pace and health conditions. If growth seems much slower or faster than peers, consult a pediatrician.
How is a child's predicted height calculated?
It uses the mid-parental height formula. A son is (father's height + mother's height + 13) ÷ 2 and a daughter is (father's height + mother's height − 13) ÷ 2. For example, with a 175 cm father and 162 cm mother, the genetic target is 175.0 cm for a son and 162.0 cm for a daughter.
What does the ±8.5 cm range mean?
Even children of the same parents vary, so about ±8.5 cm around the estimate is commonly cited as roughly a 95% range. If the estimate is 175 cm, most such children fall between 166.5 and 183.5 cm. It is a statistical width and does not guarantee any specific value within it.
Why can actual height differ from the prediction?
Parents' heights are only one clue to genetic target height. Nutrition, sleep, the timing of puberty, growth pace and health conditions all affect adult height. The result is a statistical estimate, not a diagnosis or a prophecy.
Where can I see how my child's height compares with peers?
The KDCA (Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency) growth charts for children and adolescents (2017) give height percentiles by age and sex. This calculator does not include growth-chart data; if you are worried about growth pace, consult a pediatrician.
What if I don't know one parent's exact height?
The formula uses the average of both parents' heights, so a wrong value shifts the result by half as much. Enter measured heights where possible, and treat an approximate input as a rough trend only.
