Fuel Cost Calculator

Fuel cost from distance, efficiency and fuel price.

Picking a fuel type fills in an example price. If you edit the price yourself, your value is kept.

When checked, the distance above is treated as one-way and doubled. Uncheck it if you already entered a round-trip distance.

What is a fuel cost / efficiency calculator?

The Fuel Cost mode uses distance, fuel efficiency and price to estimate the cost per trip plus monthly and yearly totals. The Fuel Efficiency mode works the other way — enter distance and actual fuel used to find your car's efficiency (km/L). Use it to plan commute or trip costs, or to check your car's real efficiency.

Electric vehicles are out of scope. EVs use electricity (kWh) instead of liquid fuel, so they need a separate calculation based on efficiency (km/kWh) and electricity price.
How to use it

Fuel Cost mode: Enter distance, fuel efficiency and price. Picking a fuel type fills in an example price, which you can overwrite with the real price. If the distance you entered is one-way, turn on Calculate as a round trip, and add driving days per month to see monthly and yearly totals.

Fuel Efficiency mode: Switch the mode above to "Fuel efficiency", then enter the actual distance driven and fuel used (L) to get efficiency (km/L) and consumption per 100km (L/100km).

Formulas

Fuel needed (L) = distance ÷ efficiency

Fuel cost = fuel needed × fuel price

Efficiency (km/L) = distance ÷ fuel used

Consumption per 100km (L/100km) = 100 ÷ efficiency

Real-life examples
  • 30km one-way commute (60km round trip): at 12.5km/L and 1,700 KRW/L → 60 ÷ 12.5 = 4.8L, 4.8 × 1,700 = 8,160 KRW. Over 22 driving days a month, that's 179,520 KRW.
  • Finding efficiency the other way: drove 400km and used 32L → 400 ÷ 32 = 12.5 km/L (= 8L/100km).
  • Cost per km: 1,700 KRW ÷ 12.5 km/L = 136 KRW/km — a quick way to estimate cost once you know the distance.
  • Example prices by fuel type: gasoline 1,700 KRW, diesel 1,600 KRW, LPG 1,000 KRW (all examples — check Opinet for real prices).
How is fuel cost calculated?
Fuel needed = distance ÷ efficiency, and fuel cost = fuel needed × fuel price. For example, a 12.5km/L car driving a 30km one-way (60km round trip) commute at 1,700 KRW/L costs 60 ÷ 12.5 = 4.8L, 4.8 × 1,700 = 8,160 KRW.
How do I calculate efficiency the other way?
Efficiency (km/L) = distance ÷ fuel used. For example, driving 400km and using 32L gives 400 ÷ 32 = 12.5km/L. Consumption per 100km (L/100km) is 100 ÷ efficiency, which is 100 ÷ 12.5 = 8L/100km in this example.
Why do I need the round-trip checkbox?
If the distance you entered is one-way, turn on the round-trip checkbox so the actual travel distance (round trip) is reflected for a realistic fuel cost. For example, a 30km one-way commute means 60km of actual daily travel. Turn it off if you already entered a round-trip distance.
Are the default prices by fuel type accurate?
The prices filled in when you pick a fuel type (gasoline 1,700 KRW, diesel 1,600 KRW, LPG 1,000 KRW) are just examples for convenience, not real prices. Check actual regional/station prices on Opinet (opinet.co.kr) and edit the price field yourself.
Can this calculator be used for electric vehicles?
No. This calculator only supports internal combustion vehicles based on liters-per-distance efficiency and fuel price. Electric vehicles use electricity (kWh) instead of fuel, so they need a separate calculation based on efficiency (km/kWh) and electricity price.
