What is this tool?
A Unix timestamp (epoch time) counts seconds or milliseconds since 1970-01-01 00:00:00 UTC. This tool converts a timestamp to a human-readable date, and a date back to a timestamp. The current timestamp updates every second at the top.
How auto-detection works
If the number has 10 digits or fewer it is treated as seconds; 11 digits or more is treated as milliseconds. For example 1700000000 is seconds and 1700000000000 is milliseconds. Override with the unit select if needed.
Privacy & processing
All conversion happens using the browser's Date API only. Your input is never uploaded or stored.
FAQ
What is a Unix timestamp?
A Unix timestamp (epoch time) is the number of seconds or milliseconds elapsed since 1970-01-01 00:00:00 UTC. It is widely used in logs, APIs, and databases because it is interpreted the same way regardless of timezone.
How are seconds and milliseconds distinguished?
This tool auto-detects by digit count: 10 digits or fewer is treated as seconds (e.g. 1700000000), 11 or more as milliseconds (e.g. 1700000000000). Override with the unit select if auto-detection is wrong.
What is the difference between ISO 8601 and UTC string?
ISO 8601 is the international standard format like 2023-11-14T22:13:20.000Z, based on UTC. The UTC (RFC) string uses the browser's toUTCString() format (e.g. Tue, 14 Nov 2023 22:13:20 GMT), while local time is converted to your system timezone.
How is timezone handled when converting a date to a timestamp?
You can choose whether the entered date/time should be interpreted as your local timezone or UTC. Local uses your system timezone; UTC interprets the input as Coordinated Universal Time directly when computing the timestamp.
Is my input sent to a server?
No. All conversion uses only the browser's Date API; your input is never uploaded or stored.
