What is the 49th-day memorial?

In Buddhist tradition, it is believed that a deceased person's spirit takes 49 days to be reborn. Memorial rites are held every 7 days from the date of passing, and the 7th rite — held on the 49th day — is the most important final memorial.

Why every 7 days — the "chilchiljae" tradition

The 49th-day memorial is also called chilchiljae (seven-times-seven rite): seven rites held seven days apart. The seventh and final rite is called makjae, meaning "the last rite," and is traditionally observed with the most care of all seven.

This custom is introduced here as a long-standing cultural practice, not as religious guidance.

How it is calculated

Nth rite date = date of passing + (N × 7 − 1) days

Counting the date of passing itself as day 1, rites fall on day 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, and 49 (the final memorial).

For reference only: this follows common Buddhist convention; actual practice may vary by region, sect, or family tradition. Please confirm the exact schedule with a temple or family elder.
What is the 49th-day memorial?
It is a Buddhist tradition where memorial rites are held every 7 days from the date of passing, with the final rite held on the 49th day.
How is the date calculated?
Counting the date of passing as day 1, rites are held every 7 days: day 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, and the final rite on day 49.
What is the order of the rites?
Chojae (day 7) - Ijae (day 14) - Samjae (day 21) - Sajae (day 28) - Ojae (day 35) - Yukjae (day 42) - Chiljae/final (day 49), seven rites in total.
Can the dates differ by region or sect?
Yes. This follows common Buddhist convention; actual practice may vary by region, sect, or family tradition, so it is best to confirm with a temple or family elder.
Is the date of passing itself counted?
Yes, this calculator counts the date of passing as day 1. The first rite falls 6 days after the date of passing, which is day 7 overall. The final rite similarly falls 48 days after, which is day 49.
How is this different from "samwuje"?
Samwuje is a separate rite held on the third day after the funeral and is not one of the seven 49th-day memorial rites. This calculator only computes the seven 7-day-interval rites of the 49th-day memorial.
